Great article. We're doing something similar with my husband's mother right now. She has her own bedroom and we share the rest of the house. Most days this works out, though with 5 kids it tends to get messy around here.
We also split the utilities in such a way that she was paying a lot less than we were, because there were more people in our family. This has worked pretty well so far.
