When I picked up the first book in the trilogy, I didn't know anything about the story at all, or even that it was a trilogy. I started reading it, and was kind of disgusted at the story line, but of course like most books I read, I was sucked in and then finished out the series in a couple of days. That being said, I'm not entirely sure this should be categorized as young adult fiction.
